As it turns out, being an atheist wonít make you into a total social pariahóeven those who create comics highly critical of the bible can find love! I was really hoping to finish Numbers before the big date, but with only a month until my wedding, my free time is about 2 seconds each week. I would love to continue making new panels all the way until the day of the ceremony, but with a new crisis every few hours, itís just not possible. Comics will recommence when I get back from my honeymoon at the end of July and we can finish off Numbers.

In the interim, please be content with some information about marriage:

Despite many believers claiming that marriage was created by their god and just for followers of their religion, the tradition of marriage predates known history, and therefore, all surviving religions.

In the Western world, Christians are very controlling regarding the concept of marriage. This is a bit ironic considering that early Christians didnít think much of the ritual. The writings of Jesus depict him in favor of marriage, but the largest contributor of the New Testament, Paul, seemed to view it only as a way to curb sinful deeds. ďNow to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.Ē (I Corinthians 7:8-9, NIV). While there are other writings where he speaks favorably about marriage, these are viewed by many biblical scholars to be fraudulent.

Early Christian ceremonies didnít have anything about them that made them uniquely Christian. Wedding bands, white dresses, musical processions, etc., have nothing to do with the bible or Jesus. Whatís even more shocking to believers is the fact that early Christians didnít even have clergy present for their weddings! It wasnít until around 80 years after the estimated death of Jesus that anyone even suggested having clergy present for the ceremony, a suggestion that went mostly ignored.

The Church didnít require weddings to be officiated by clergy until 1563 CE when a group of bishops got together at the 24th session of the Council of Trent and decided for God that he would only see a marriage as valid if a member of the clergy presided over it.

The next time you hear from me, Iíll be Mr. TersigniÖ oh thatís right, marriage is still really sexist! I considered taking my future wifeís name rather than have her take mine, just to give the middle finger to tradition, but, while the state of Michigan has a fast-track system setup for wives taking their husbandís name, if a husband wants to take his wifeís name, he must do a full legal name-change which involves a lot more paperwork and even a hit to your credit score!

TAG, may you and your beloved know many years of serenity together--calm and smiling life. May you know a few moments of turmoil, so that you will appreciate the many good times all the more, and may those moments of disharmony, pain, and stress be mild at most, and nothing overly serious in the long run. But mostly, may you know and enjoy many years of serenity together.

Ladyofthemasque writes:

Btw, when will you be coming back? Got a return date yet, post-honeymoon?

Comics will resume July 28th! Mark your calendars!

Gaaaah! I take off for the UK on the 31st for 19 days...!

Eh, I'll get a little bit of a rational logic + ancient hocuspocus mockery fix before I have to go on a mental diet again, so it won't be too bad...maybe...

Oh the irony!
