Enter Hagar, an Egyptian slave no doubt bestowed upon Abram by Pharaoh. She has one of the worst lives in the bible. Let's begin with Genesis 16:1-3 in second person perspective.
You're a young woman living as a slave in Egypt. You have no property, no wealth, and every aspect of your life is determined by the will of Pharaoh. One day, Pharaoh buys a woman and uses you, and several other slaves, as payment. A little while later, it is discovered that the old man you're now the property of is a liar, and is being kicked out of Egypt. Now you must leave the only place you've ever known as a home and travel several months through the desert in order to serve a pair of total strangers. One day, you overhear the old man's wife convincing him to forcibly marry you! The very next day you're wed to the 85-year-old man and every night for several weeks he rapes you. A month later you discover that you are indeed pregnant with his child, a child that will be taken from you when it's born and raised by the older couple.
Can you imagine such a horrible life? In every verse, Hagar is used and abused, raped, bought, sold by Abram and Sarai—the heroes of the bible. Slavery, forced marriage, polygamy, rape, and planned kidnapping. How could anyone revere these awful people?
